"Dry" hedges
A pile of prunings stacked up along Old Avenue in Church Meadow in November 2020 was the first sign of BWT's latest ecological initiative: Dry or 'dead' hedges.
This pile of prunings was used to create the first of Church Meadow's dry hedges. These hedges are one of the oldest forms of barriers used in Britain and are important for wild life.
They provide habitat and shelter from predators and weather for birds, hedgehogs and other small mammals as well as providing a home to insects and spiders.
The twigs and branches will crumble and rot down providing more food for insects so we will be topping them up as we continue our maintenance of the site.
